Jericho Paddling Club

When you join the JPC, you’ll have access to both club equipment and club members’ expertise.

OC6 Practices

We hold open practices throughout the week, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and again on Saturday mornings. These are informal affairs, with a focus on increasing fitness and improving technique. Practices are 2 hours in length: 90 minutes on the water and 30 minutes of preparation and post-paddle maintenance. All paddlers are expected to arrive 15 minutes before launch time and to stay to wash and store the canoes afterwards. Our practice schedule and boat assignments are managed online through TeamLinkt. When you join the club and express an interest in paddling in an OC6, you’ll be given a code to log into the TeamLinkt app. From there you can sign up for practices and you’ll be able to monitor how many other paddlers are attending. Practices depend on having at least 5 paddlers per boat, including a trained steer. If those requirements are not met, paddlers may opt to take small boats (personal or club craft) instead of, or in addition to the 6 person outrigger canoe. Our competitive racing team trains on Sunday mornings. Coach approval is required to join the competitive team. If you’re interested in trying out, contact The JPC for details.

Midweek Morning Paddles

If you have some flexibility in your schedule, there are other groups who regularly paddle single boats (OC1s, surf-skis) on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Launch time is 10:00 am. There is no sign up for this informal group.

Access to Small Boats and SUPs

We currently have 3 stand up paddle boards, 2 surf-skis, 2 single outrigger canoes (OC1’s) and a 2-person outrigger canoe for loan to our members. While sign out is not necessary at this time, new members are required to do an orientation session before using the equipment. Paddles for the SUPs and surf skis are also available. Schedule an orientation by clicking here.

Coaching and Steers’ Training

We have some very experienced and accomplished paddlers in the JPC who act as mentors to other paddlers. As such, many act as informal coaches during practices, giving valuable advice on technique. Don’t underestimate the power of in-situ coaching! Being open to their advice will allow you to improve your paddling ability.

We have one official coach, who is responsible for training the competitive team on Sunday mornings. Coach approval is required to join. If you’re interested in trying out for the competitive team, contact The JPC for details.

Steers people are always needed — and much valued — by the club. Certification by our Steers’ Coach is required before taking responsibility for an OC6 during practices. If you’d like to learn to steer — or want to become certified with the club, contact a member of the JPC to find out when the next steers’ clinic is taking place.
